Meet John…

Every year, our team supports around 200 patients through our clinical and living well support.

Amongst those is John, who has been a patient since May 2025.

John had a long and successful career as a cameraman for BBC, lecturer at several universities and co-founded the extremely successful local charity ‘Where Next’, which offers work experience, life skills and social opportunities to people with learning disabilities.

He was referred to Primrose Hospice after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. After taking the decision not to have treatment, he started regularly attending our Day Hospice.

“When they mentioned going to Primrose in Bromsgrove, I was really quite relieved, because this place has got such a good name so I was very happy with that.”

One of the most important things I’ve learnt since being at Primrose is how little government funding Hospices get, I was really shocked by that.”

Listen to when we sat down with John to reflect on his time at Primrose below.

As John mentioned, we have to raise £1.95 million every year to provide our vital care and support to patients like John and many more. We receive just 14.6% of this from the government, which is why we heavily rely on the support from our community.

Thank you to John for sharing his story.
