Meet Hayley…
We have a huge variety of volunteer roles you could get involved with to give back to your local Hospice.
We met with Hayley who owns and runs, Little Woods Reiki and volunteers as a Complementary Therapist supporting our patients and families in our community. Read about why she volunteers her time below:
Why do you ‘Give a shift?’
I began volunteering Reiki at the Primrose Hospice in April 2024, and it’s been such a beautiful journey. I give a shift for both selfless and selfish reasons (I’m only human!). I want to offer something meaningful to people facing the unimaginable—a space where they can find respite and deep relaxation when they need it most. I’ve needed that space myself before.
My dear friend Jules was lovingly cared for by the hospice during her illness and final days. I’m forever grateful she had that support from people who truly understood what she was going through.
After 16 years working in the NHS, I knew moving to self-employed Reiki might feel a little isolating. Volunteering here keeps me connected to a caring community and gives me purpose beyond my home practice. It also keeps my confidence and knowledge in my practice up and holds me accountable.
What’s your favourite thing about volunteering?
My favourite thing is the space—the emotional, physical, and nurturing space everyone holds for one another. There’s a beautiful connection between volunteers, staff, and patients that is equal, non-judgmental, and compassionate. I always look forward to being greeted by kind-hearted smiles.
I also love meeting new people and hearing their stories. It reminds me of the incredible strength and resilience we all carry, and it’s both grounding and humbling.
Why do you think other people should volunteer for Primrose Hospice?
There are countless reasons to volunteer, depending on what speaks to you personally—whether it’s to give back to a hospice that has supported you or a loved one, to find a sense of purpose and self-worth, or simply to be there for people who need it most.
No matter your motivation, I promise you’ll gain far more than you give. I see now why volunteers end up here for years!
Thank you Hayley for sharing your thoughts!
