A Successful Partnership to Reduce Waste and Support Local Charities

Over the past six months, a new initiative at the Household Recycling Centre in Redditch has successfully diverted waste from landfills items that would otherwise have gone to landfill to local charities, generating vital funds.

This project, a collaboration between the Worcestershire County Council, Severn Waste Services (SWS), Primrose Hospice and Family Support Centre, and Age UK North Worcestershire, has been a huge success.

A permanent container has been placed at the waste disposal site providing a convenient way for people to donate items they no longer need when visiting the Household Recycling Centre.

This initiative not only supports waste reduction and recycling but also provides another opportunity for our community to support their local charities. The items collected are sorted and sold in charity shops operated by Primrose Hospice and Age UK North Worcestershire, with proceeds directly supporting people in need.

“We are thrilled with the success of this project,” said Amanda Allan CEO of Age UK North Worcestershire, “Not only are we reducing waste and promoting sustainability, but we’re also raising money to provide our important local services and make a real difference for our community.”

“We really appreciate the support from the Council and Severn Waste Services to make this collaboration possible,” said Ian McRoy, Retail Manager at Primrose Hospice. “This has been a huge success due to partnership working between the charities and organisations working closely together.”

Michael Hornby, Senior Operations Manager at Severn Waste Services: Severn Waste Services are delighted to work with our valued partners Age UK North Worcestershire, Primrose Hospice and Family Support Centre and Worcestershire County Council in ensuring the success of this initiative. Together, we are making significant changes in how pre-loved items can be reused and given a new lease of life whilst raising vital funds for our partners and reducing the impact on landfill use.”

Look out for the new container at the recycling centre and, if your items are just ‘unloved’ (rather than broken or damaged), please consider donating instead of dumping!
