Emily’s Story
Did you know our Family Support Team provide around 2,000 one to one counselling, family support and benefits sessions every year to adults who are experiencing bereavement?
One of the people we’ve supported is Emily.
Emily first came to Primrose Hospice in 2013 when her grandmother sadly died. Recognising that she needed support, she visited our Family Support Centre, where she received 1-2-1 counselling and reflexology.
Years later, in 2021, Emily found herself returning to Primrose after the sudden death of her mother.
“It knocked me for six, because she was only 64 and it was very sudden. I found myself not feeling well enough to cope, and I started to come here and again about a year or so after.”
During this time, Emily was supported by one of our student social workers for counselling and again accessed reflexology – something she found calming and beneficial.
“After leaving Primrose I definitely felt less overwhelmed with grief and I’m hoping that I’ve built up some resilience now that I’ll be able to carry on, on my own for a bit.
Some of my family live abroad, so I don’t have a lot of family here. Coming here has helped me to have someone to talk to about my problems.”
We know that many people may feel nervous or unsure about reaching out for support, so we asked Emily what advice she would give to someone who might benefit from visiting Primrose Hospice. She told us:
“Don’t be afraid to talk about a person who has died. Sometimes, people are afraid to confront the issue because it makes them want to cry. You don’t have to be strong all the time. You can allow yourself to enjoy those memories and you don’t need to bottle everything up.”
At Primrose Hospice, we provide free support to adults and children when a loved one has a life-limiting illness or has died. If you, or someone you know, could benefit from our support, please visit our website to find out how we can help.
