Team from The Alex take on Birmingham 10k in memory of friend

A TEAM from Redditch’s Alexandra Hospital will take on the Simplyhealth Great Birmingham 10k to raise funds for Primrose Hospice in memory of a friend.

The team of 12, made up of anaesthetists, surgeons, operating department practitioners and theatre nurses, will run the course which takes them past Brummie landmarks such as the Cathedral and Aston University.

Pulling on their trainers will be Lucy Young, Rashida Bashir, Cindy Persad, Nageena Hussain, Matt Wilson, Mikey Evans, Jay Germain, Matt Holland, Keshav Mathur, Jennie Stokes, Emily Johnson and Stuart Davis.

The group run races several times during the year, from 5ks to ultra-marathons, but they always run the Birmingham 10k for charity.

They decided to run from Primrose Hospice this year after the charity supported Lucy’s friend Becky after she was diagnosed with cancer.

Lucy said: “Sadly my beautiful friend passed away in March from stage 4 bowel cancer, leaving a wonderful husband and two amazing children.

“Primrose Hospice were an amazing support for Becky and her family, whilst she was going through treatment and there for her during her final hours.”

Incredibly, the group managed to reach its fundraising target of £500 within a month of fundraising but they hope to raise as much as possible.

Anna Wilson, community fundraiser at Primrose Hospice, said: “It is incredible that the team from the Alexandra Hospital will be taking part in the Simplyhealth Great Birmingham 10k for Primrose.

“The money they raise will ensure that we can continue to provide our services for free to people who have a life-limiting condition.

“We can also provide help and support for their families and can provide support after the death of a loved one too.

“However, to able to keep all this support free for whoever needs it, Primrose Hospice must raise £1.75million every year.”
