Support from our community

Here at Primrose Hospice & Family Support Centre we have the pleasure of welcoming work placements for healthcare students and work experience for other students attending school or colleges to the hospice throughout the year. They join both our clinical and family support teams and help to support in our teams in many different ways.

We recently spoke to Becky who is a student district nurse and recently joined our Clinical Team as part of her placement. Read her words below: A Nurse sat in the Primrose Hospice garden

Why did you want to come to Primrose Hospice as part of your placement?

I wanted to come here because I’m passionate about palliative care and I wanted to see what kind of services that you have to offer so I can spread the word about your services.

What was your understanding or impression of Primrose before you came here?

That it’s a place for patients to come and to join in with whatever activities they have, but it’s much more than that.

And what’s your understanding now?

As soon as I came in, it’s just so peaceful, tranquil and calming. All the staff are lovely, it’s about enabling patients to live their best possible life whilst living with a life-limiting illness.

Have you got to know any of our patients?

I’ve chatted to a few patients about what it means to them to come here and the impact that it’s having. It’s about them engaging with other patients as well building those friendships and it really means the world to them to come here.

Why do you think our community needs Primrose Hospice?

I think from a clinical perspective I see there is that need to provide the emotional needs and more holistic care that is needed. There is a gap missing in the system and Primrose fulfil that gap.

Our healthcare system doesn’t have the time or resources to fully give everything to patients and it’s what they deserve. So that’s where places like Primrose come in.

What would you say to someone who is living with a life-limiting illness to encourage them to come to Primrose?

So I would tell them my experience of everybody that I’ve engaged with, how much of a positive experience it is with for the patients. I’d talk about the impact it’s having and how much it will benefit them. Often the patients are going through a really tough time with lots of hospital appointments and coming to Primrose is time for them and as I said, to live their best possible life.

Thank you Becky for talking to our team and for joining our team for your work experience.

Our teams are always on the look out for volunteers to join us in a huge variety of flexible roles across the hospice. Click here to find out more about volunteering or contact Jo, our Volunteers’ Manager below:
