Primrose Hospice & Family Support Centre provides care and advice to patients living with a life-limiting illness and we support all families facing bereavement in the North East Worcestershire area.

We know that some people may be apprehensive about visiting a Hospice, so we’ve answered some questions you may have to provide reassurance and dispel myths about Hospice care.

What services do you offer?

At Primrose Hospice & Family Support Centre we have a Day Hospice providing a range of tailored support for patients. Our friendly & professional Clinical Team will provide you with the support and understanding to make decisions which best suit your needs and diagnosis. As part of our Day Hospice support, we provide a hot meal to patients on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

We also provide physiotherapy and various support groups for patients, including GALS and Men’s groups, yoga, meditation and craft and art groups.

Our Family Support Service offers individualised support to adults and children including a counselling service, benefits advice and our living well service. Our support is delivered via one to one sessions and groups.

Our friendly Family Support team will provide you with support and advice for all your family to deal with difficult situations or decisions.

We don’t have any beds at Primrose Hospice, the closest palliative care ward is The Primrose Unit, located at the Princess of Wales Community Hospital in Bromsgrove, which is a NHS ward.

Are hospices sad places?

Although Hospices provide palliative care, they are welcoming and joyful places. You will often see groups of patients laughing and chatting together, as well as groups of children enjoying activities in our beautiful gardens.

Are hospices just for older people?

Primrose Hospice’s Clinical Services welcome people over the age of 18 who is living with a life-limiting illness. Our Family Support Services support adults and children aged 5 and older.

How do I make a referral and can I refer myself or a relative/loved one to the hospice?

You can refer yourself or a loved one to Primrose Hospice. If you are interested in receiving support from Primrose Hospice & Family Support Centre visit our make a referral page here or call 01527 871051.

Alternatively, you can ask any healthcare professional to make a referral on your behalf.

To access Primrose Hospice’s services the person being referred must be registered with a GP located in the Bromsgrove or Redditch district.

Once you’ve made your referral a member of the Primrose team will be in contact with you.

If you have made a referral to our Clinical services urgent referrals will be responded to within two working days.

For all non-urgent referrals, you should expect to hear from the team within five working days.

If you have made a referral to our Family Support services, we aim to arrange an assessment for you within two weeks and from this we will agree which services we consider would be most helpful to you.

There is sometimes a wait for some of our services e.g. counselling or some of our specific group support, but your name will be placed on a waiting list and we will contact you as soon as we can.

Do hospices only treat people with cancer?

No, in general each Hospice is unique in what treatment they can provide. Primrose Hospice’s Clinical team support patients living with any life-limiting illnesses such as heart failure, lung conditions, cancer, neurological conditions and more.

Our support is aimed at helping patients not only manage their illness and symptoms but also achieve their goals.

Why has my doctor/nurse referred me to Primrose Hospice?

There are many reasons why your healthcare professional has suggested you visit Primrose Hospice. We can support with everything from providing care and advice for things like nutrition, helping improve mobility, providing benefits advice and supporting families through bereavement. Attending Primrose Hospice can be extremely beneficial to improve your physical and mental wellbeing.

Are you part of the NHS?

No, Primrose Hospice & Family Support Centre is an independent charity. We control how we deliver our services, meaning we can tailor our care and support to every individual.

We receive 14.6% of the £1.95 million we have to raise each year from the NHS. We have a team of highly professional and qualified staff who prioritise the needs of our patients and clients. Our counselling service is BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) accredited and is delivered by qualified staff and volunteers.

How are the Primrose Unit and Primrose Hospice connected?

The Primrose Unit was opened in 2004 using some funding from Primrose Hospice & Family Support Centre, which is why it was originally called ‘Primrose at the Princess’, it is now known as ‘The Primrose Unit’.

The Primrose Unit at the Princess of Wales Community Hospital in Bromsgrove is an NHS  ward. Primrose Hospice & Family Support Centre is an independent charity and is not part of the Primrose Unit.

Primrose Hospice staff and volunteers provide support to The Primrose Unit; our Family Support team support patients and their families while they are on the ward providing counselling and complementary therapy. Our Family Support team may also receive referrals to support the loved ones of those who have died at The Primrose Unit.

The Unit is staffed 24/7 with Registered nurses and medical support is available out of hours and over a weekend from a Consultant in Palliative Medicine. Find out more about The Primrose Unit by visiting this page.

Do I have to pay to attend Primrose Hospice?

No, all our Primrose services are provided free of charge. We do however, have to raise £1.95 million every year to fund our services. If you can, please consider making a one off or regular donation to Primrose Hospice to help us continue providing our care and support for those that need them.

Is Primrose Hospice accessible for wheelchairs?

Yes, the whole Hospice including our Coppice Family Support Centre is accessible for wheelchair users.

Is there parking on site?

Yes, there is free and accessible parking at Primrose Hospice & Family Support Centre.

Can I smoke in the grounds of Primrose Hospice?

All visitors to Primrose Hospice are requested to smoke off site (this includes the use of e-cigarettes and personal vaporisers). There is a designated smoking area outside for patients only.
